We have been working on theme over the past several weeks in reading. One of our folk tales discussed the theme of
kindness and compassion. With that in
mind, students researched and picked a local Kansas City charity that is important
to them. They are working on persuasive
writing pieces that they will present to a panel of judges. These judges have experience in non profit
organizations, and charities. They will
pick the best persuasive piece! The kids are looking forward to applying their
learning to a live audience!
Grades
This is our last full
week of school! All grades should
be updated by Wednesday! As a reminder, if students do not return assignments in the day
that they are do, they will be asked to attend homework help that afternoon.
The Fixer Upper Open
House PBL – 12/20 @ 2:15
The fifth grade students have been working hard on designing
their dream homes! They have used their knowledge of area, perimeter,
multi-digit multiplication, and other math skills to create an amazing
product. We would like to invite you to come to our open house to see
some of our hard work. During this time we would encourage you to walk
around all three fifth grade classrooms asking students to share pieces of
their project and the process they went through to achieve the final
result. Students will have a total price for their home in hopes of persuading
you to purchase their masterpiece! Get ready to check out some awesome
math, writing, art, and many other components that went into these great
projects. An RSVP would be appreciated however it is not expected.
We also welcome you to forward this invite to other important guests, or family
members that might be interested in joining in on the fun!
GingerBread Houses PBL –
In reading the past couple weeks we have been working with two
important comprehension skills, theme and sequencing. This week we
are reading two stories with the theme of problem solving and working together.
In order to tap into the theme, practice some team work, while also
using sequencing words to put our steps in order, students are going to create
Gingerbread Houses!
Please look below
for ways to donate supplies to help this fun holiday themed reading project!

Treat Yourself Bakery
In order to continue working on some of our math skills, specifically
multiplying decimals. We are going to add an extra element to our Open
House on December 20th. Each group of students will also be
running a bakery to piggy back on their Interior Design PBL (maybe to help
entice purchases! J) . During this portion of the project, they will
be selling baked goods to you as parents for purchase. Upon your arrival
to the Open House, you will be given Cougar Bucks to spend throughout the
different fifth grade classrooms. Groups will be selling baked goods for
various prices (perhaps at a discounted rate!) They will then make change
for you and you will have a sweet treat to enjoy as you view our projects.
So what does this mean for you? Each group will be asked to
bring in some treats. Each member can bring something, or as a group they
can decide to bring in a dozen. We will begin discussing this on Friday
of this week, so you should have a week’s notice should your child be
responsible for bring in items. We would love for the items to be sent to
school on December 19th (Monday) so that we can package and
prepare them before Tuesday afternoon. Should this be a problem for you,
or your student, please let me know and we can make arrangements to take care
of this portion of their project at school. Store bought items work great
too!
